Carolyn Isaac operates a small farm growing tropical fruits and vegetables on the small island of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Isaac remembers as a child growing peas and shelling them to make supper and growing tea bush to make tea. With all that practice, agriculture became part of her life, and as an adult she remains dedicated to “reaping what you sow.” Isaac plants and harvests mangoes, passion fruit, soursop, banana, sugar apple, gooseberries, guava, and other fruit crops. She sells the fruits to a small business called Tropical Pops Popsicles and Smoothies, which create a delicious value-added product for retail. “Although over time I have met lots of challenges with farming, I have never stopped, it has become a part of me,” says Isaac “For me, farming is therapeutic; there’s no better feeling than eating off the land.” With these funds from RAFI, she plans to replace the fencing of the farm and is grateful for the opportunity to “get it done right instead of patching here and there.”
