Guåhan Sustainable Culture (GSC)

Hagåtña, Guam

About Us:

Guåhan Sustainable Culture (GSC), founded in 2019, is a 501(c)(3) organization led by BIPOC women dedicated to fostering environmental sustainability on Guam. Our mission is to cultivate ideas and strategies for environmental sustainability through practical education, social engagement, and collaborative partnerships. We envision a Guam where people actively strive toward food sovereignty and greater food security, proficiently cultivating their own food while sustaining the island’s land, air, and seas for future generations. GSC has supported local farmers through initiatives including over $175,000 in produce purchases and creating reliable markets. In response to Super Typhoon Mawar in 2023, we launched our Farmers 1st program, distributing over 120 microgrants to help farmers recover. Recently, GSC became a key partner in establishing a USDA Regional Food Business Center for Guam, CNMI and American Samoa. Partners include Hawaii, Alaska, and other Pacific and Caribbean territories.

Our Anticipated Grant Activities:

With the RAFI BIPOC Climate & Equity Policy Grant, Guåhan Sustainable Culture will amplify Guam farmers’ voices in Farm Bill advocacy. Activities include:

  1. Developing a “Guam Farm Bill Priorities” report based on stakeholder input.
  2. Conducting meetings with Guam’s Congressional delegate, local policymakers, and other regional representatives.
  3. Launching a social media awareness campaign on Farm Bill impacts.
  4. Educating farmers on new Farm Bill provisions through workshops and media outreach.
  5. Creating user-friendly guides for Guam’s farmers on new programs.
  6. Establishing a helpline for navigating new Farm Bill programs.

We’ll focus on land access, improving USDA program accessibility, promoting climate-resilient

agriculture, supporting local food systems, addressing food waste, and enhancing disaster preparedness for island territories. This grant will significantly boost our capacity to engage in policy advocacy, bringing farmer perspectives directly to policymakers.
