“It’s a blessing to bless this land!”
The day commenced with a warm welcome from Carolyn Cheek of JAC Farm, one of the dedicated farmers who has nurtured this CSA. With a passion for feeding her community, Carolyn set the tone for the gathering, inviting attendees to reflect on the importance of food, land, and the relationships that sustain community.
On September 28, 2024, the Wake County CSA community gathered to celebrate its periodic “Blessing of the Land,” marking the beginning of fall in a cherished community-supported agriculture (CSA) relationship between local farmers and area churches. This event exemplified the deep-rooted connections forged through farming, faith, and friendship. Since its inception in spring 2021, local farmers of color have contributed to this CSA in order to provide produce to several local faith communities and their neighbors.
Peter van Doorsten of Umstead Park United Church of Christ, another key figure in the community, led the group in singing a hymn, fostering a spirit of unity and reverence. After a moment of prayer, participants enjoyed a meal featuring fresh produce sourced from the very farms they support, reinforcing the idea that food is not just sustenance but a celebration of life and community.
This particular event allowed attendees to tour Carolyn’s new hydroponic system. This cutting-edge farming method was developed after Carolyn’s daughter Shanda had applied for a grant with a local nonprofit organization to establish this project. Tragically, she passed away before the grant was awarded, leaving Carolyn with a deep sense of purpose to continue her daughter’s vision. With immense courage and grace, Carolyn has dedicated herself to nurturing this hydroponic system, demonstrating resilience and embodying hope in the face of adversity.
Participants left with full hearts and a renewed commitment to the CSA. The Blessing of the Land not only celebrated the beginning of fall but also reinforced the shared mission of the farmers and churches to promote sustainable practices and foster community bonds. This event serves as a reminder that, through collaboration and faith, communities can flourish, rooted in love for the land and each other.
