Omar Colón Muriel is an independent farmer, artist, and co-coordinator of the Family Planting Project, and also a helmsman. The Family Planting Project project is an agro-silvopastoral project, incorporating the planting of trees and the rotation of animals for grazing, located in the town of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. The farm offers a Community Supported Agriculture program including a basic basket with various crops. They also currently offer a course on plowing with oxen and practical workspaces for planting. According to Colón Muriel, “We are strengthened by knowing that maintaining an agroecological plantation is a fight for food sovereignty within the framework of social justice.” With the funds obtained, the project hopes to install a roof and rainwater capture system for a multidisciplinary space.
Omar Colón Muriel. Agricultor y artista independiente. Co-coordinador del proyecto de siembra familiar y además timonero. Nos encontramos en el pueblo de Mayagüez. Nuestra finca ofrece un programa de Agricultura Apoyada por la Comunidad donde incluimos una canasta básica con cultivos variados. Actualmente ofrecemos un curso de arado con bueyes y espacios de trabajo práctico en la siembra. Somos un proyecto agrosilvopastoril, incorporamos la siembra de árboles y la rotación de animales para el pastoreo. Nos fortalece saber que mantener una siembra agroecológica es una lucha por la soberanía alimentaria dentro del marco de justicia social. Con los fondos obtenidos esperamos instalar un techo para un espacio multidiscliplinario que principalmente recogerá el agua de lluvia necesaria para la siembra.
