Tatum Lewis owns and operates Black Roots Farm (BRF), a 20-acre farm located in an urban neighborhood in downtown Winchester, KY. Since 2018, BRF has focused on soil sustainability and land conservation while providing healthy, organic vegetables and fruits. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the farm supplied free organic food to elders and families with small children, helping sustain the local food system in a community affected by food deserts.
BRF is dedicated to addressing the long-standing issue of food insecurity in underserved areas by securing funding and resources to promote agriculture. The farm is also committed to educating the community about farming as a Black American. With the support of these funds, BRF plans to expand its offerings by adding protein sources such as eggs and packaged meats to its food desert market.
